6-Week Squash the Beef Animation Workshop

The Squash the Beef Animation Workshop is designed to build skills in illustration, storytelling, animation, and editing. It combines structured training sessions with ongoing expert mentorship and practical work experience. Participants gain hands-on practice and receive peer and mentor feedback. They also have opportunities to showcase their completed animation projects.

Participants will learn:

  • Illustration and Design – They will learn marker‑pen and digital techniques, develop original characters, and visualise unique story worlds.

  • Storytelling and Scriptwriting – They will learn to craft narratives focused on real‑world issues, building engaging scripts that blend message, emotion, and imagination.

  • Storyboarding and Audio Production – They will learn how to plan story structure, record voiceovers, and develop an ear for tone, pacing, and atmosphere.

  • Animation and Editing – They will practice using practical tools to animate key scenes, add effects, sync audio, and assemble a final animated reel.

  • Presentation and Reflection – They will be supported in gaining confidence in presenting creative work, exploring how digital storytelling can drive awareness and positive change.

Mentorship and work experience

Each participant will receive regular one‑to‑one and group mentorship from animation, film, and design professionals. Mentors guide learners through every stage of development—offering feedback, sharing industry insights, and helping each young creator refine their creative voice.
Workshops provide hands‑on practice with illustration, audio, and editing software, giving participants the chance to experience real creative workflows and collaborate with peers.

Showcase and recognition:

By the final week, participants will complete a polished animated short and present it at a public showcase event. Every creator receives a Roadworks Media Certificate of Achievement recognising their artistic and social contribution.
Projects will also feature across community and partner platforms, allowing participants to share their work with wider audiences.
